This image was orignially painted for myself as a work of fine art and later sold for commercial use.
Indent: dot clear gifWhile still an amateur in 1984, I took advantage of an opportunity to visit with an accomplished book cover artist in New Jersey. As his assistant I produced a number of images for various types of commercial jobs and gained some insight into the book industry. I also began the work you see below.Indent: dot clear gif
The image started as an pencil sketch on artboard, which was then inked in sepia to provide definition. I began painting in oils, blocking in the large areas of color and airbrushing the light streaming past the tree. However, when I returned to Canada later that year with the image still unfinished, I sanded the painted area and completed the image in acrylics, which at the time I felt were easier to manage.
Indent: dot clear gifThis image was later reproduced as the cover for the 10th anniversary issue (#110) of Dragon Magazine. It was also reproduced by TSR Inc., in their book The Art of Dragon Magazine.
